Boston bombings, Stress and therapeutic landscapes

What a week it has been, so stressful.  One night I had the news on late, and then was unable to get to sleep.  I even woke up early, without the alarm.  I need my garden more than ever to heal, calm down and try to relax.  As the Grateful Dead song goes, What a long strange trip it’s been.
Tips to heal:
Take a walk in a park, nature preserve or garden.  Mother Nature has a way of calming you down.  The fresh air, beauty, and order are very calming.  It is also beneficial to get out of the house, away from the routine, and especially away from the TV for a while.
Visit a florist shop.  The beauty of flowers arranged just so, brings joy and lift your spirit.  You can buy one or make your own.  Making your own arrangement is very creative and will make you feel good.  Enjoy the aroma of flowers.  Aromatherapy is great for soothing the soul.
Go to a garden center.  The beauty of orderly landscape plants and flowers contrasts the chaos and sadness of recent events of Boston and Texas.  The soothing sounds of water cascading from fountains will help you feel better.

Time will heal most of our wounds.  In the meantime, just take it one day at a time.
Try not to self medicate with pills, wine or sweets.  Let Mother Nature heal you.

Soap making from the garden

Several years ago at our Broward County Herb society meeting, we had a guest speaker who was a soap maker.  We learned that our largest organ of our body was our skin.  According to the speakers, what we wash ourselves with can have health benefits or health hazards.
Latest research confirms there are several toxic ingredients in our soaps and shampoos, according to Dr. Marcola.  Some people are more allergic to the ingredients than others.  He recommends avoiding all of them and buying organic products.

Last week I discovered a twitter peep who was a soap maker.  Her name is Jenny Anthony. I tweeted t o her that I loved natural soaps.   She was kind enough to offer to send me a bar to try.  A package arrived and I was delighted to find three beautifully wrapped soaps that perfumed the room with a potpourri of fragrances.
One was called Summer‘s Night.  The ingredients are olive oil, coconut oil, palm oil, turmeric powder and fragrance.  I have to find out what the fragrance is; it is so aromatic and pleasant.
A Calendula petals soap has shea butter, coconut oil, olive oil, sweet almond oil, and silk.
The third hand crafted soap was a Sweet Almond.  Jenny explained, “The oils are olive, sweet almond, coconut, organic palm and cocoa butter. It has pure chamomile tea added and is colored with comfrey powder. All my recipes are my own, which is true of most soapers.”

On Jenny’s Facebook page, I learned she is passionate about soap making and gardening.  I admire people who follow their passions.   She aspires to grow most of her herbs organically to utilize in her soaps.  I love her slogan, “Created from the ground up.”  Her business is called Jenny B’s Handcrafted Soap.  Jenny follows her passions and says, “There is something magical to me to take a substance as caustic as lye and chemically combine it to oils and butters from the earth. That is where my passion for gardens (and gardeners) connects.  I want to appeal to people of like mind and go wherever it leads.”

Pining For the Holidays: Learn How to Bring Amazing Health Benefits to You and Your Family This Winter Season.

Pine oil has so many health benefits it’s like having a doctor in a bottle! Dermatologists have used it to treat many skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis, athlete’s foot, cuts and more. Its antiseptic properties lend itself for household cleanser (Pinesol) and natural deodorizer. Massage therapists use it to relieve aching muscles and arthritis due to its pain relieving properties. Years ago when TB was rampant and there was not cure, doctors prescribed fresh air camps in the mountains. There were cabins with no windows, and the pine was the only relief. Doctors world wide would prescribe spending time in the forest to heal respiratory infections, asthma and bronchitis before the discovery of modern medicine. Fleas would be controlled with pine tar soap. Clothes would be moth free with pine tar paper lining the drawers.

The holiday season can cause our emotions to roller coaster. Pine oil can ease the anxiety and stress over the holidays. Its called aromatherapy and the benefits are plentiful. It refreshes, relaxes and rejuvenates the mind body and spirit. The essential oil comes from the Pinus sylvestris tree.

Have a pine needle sachet party. Get fresh pine needle branches from Christmas trees. The fraiser fir works quite well. Buy precut netting and ribbon at a crafts store. Pluck the needles from the stems until you have a nice amount. Enjoy the aroma on your fingers. Notice how your fingers get black! That is the pine tar. Place the needles in the center of the netting, gather the ends, tie a ribbon around it and your sachets are ready to enjoy. Place a few in your drawers to make your cloths smell nice, and keep pests away. Keep some sachets in your car for tension free errand runs. Place some around the house. The needles keep their scent for yeas. Tourist areas in the country sell pine needle pillows. Let me know how your family and friends enjoyed this event!
